Preserving the Bond: Why I Photograph Dogs

Preserving the Bond: Why I Photograph Dogs

One of the most meaningful photographs I have of my own dog, Loki, was taken several months before I had to say goodbye. His face was graying, his legs had lost the strength of youth, and he struggled to climb onto the ottoman. But then he smiled – and that moment was everything. I had no idea then how deeply that image would come to matter. How much that smile would matter. It became more than a memory, it became an emotional lifeline in my sea of grief.

This portrait of Loki hangs on the wall in my bedroom, where I see his smiling face every night before I sleep. And every time I look at it, I’m reminded of the love and joy he brought to my life. I am also reminded of why I began this work in the first place and why I feel strongly about the importance of preserving that bond.

Dogs are not just pets, they are companions, caretakers, mood-lifters, secret-keepers, and best friends – they are family. They teach us patience, presence, and unconditional love. When they leave, they take a piece of our heart and leave a void that can never be filled. And we are never the same.

Photography helps hold onto that love. It freezes it in time, allowing us to return to it whenever we need to.

Photography allows us to hold on to more than just memories. It preserves the feeling of being loved by them. It captures their spirit and reminds us of all the little things – the way they lean into your side, the glimmer in their eyes when they see you, the excitement every time  you come home, the way their energy fills a room or calms your storm.

It’s not just about what they looked like, it’s about who they were and what they meant to you. These are not just pictures, they are visual echoes of a relationship that shaped your life and if you’re lucky, made you a better person.

That’s why I photograph dogs, because I believe their stories matter.

I believe they deserve to be remembered with the same depth, care, and respect we give to any beloved family member. I also believe you deserve to see the love you shared, long after the paws have gone quiet.

If you ever want to create something lasting to honor your dog’s place in your story and to preserve that treasured bond, I’d be honored to help.

Preserve the bond that changed your life.
