Beyond the Lens: The Green Side of Green Paws

When I moved to Austin in 2019, I knew it was time for something new. This city is one of the most dog-friendly and vegan-friendly in the country, which felt like the perfect place to embrace  my love of dogs and my deeper values. I decided to rebrand my business (previously Candid FX Photography) and Green Paws Photography was born from that shift: a brand dedicated to capturing heartfelt moments, while staying true to an animal and Eco-conscious way of life.

Have you wondered why “Green Paws”?

When I started Green Paws Photography, I wanted a name that reflected both what I do and what I care about. “Green” speaks to the Eco-friendly values behind my business; from the products I offer to the choices I make in the studio, while “Paws” keeps the heart of it front and center: celebrating dogs! Together, the name reflects my commitment to creating beautiful portraits of the dogs we love while staying mindful of the impact we have on the world around us. Beautiful artwork does not need to come at the expense of the environment or other animals.

 

A Deeper Commitment to Animals and the Planet

While I specialize in photographing dogs, my love for animals doesn’t stop there. I’ve followed a plant-based lifestyle for 40 years; initially out of compassion for animals, and then later as I learned more about the environmental impact of animal agriculture, my commitment strengthened. It shocked me to discover that livestock production accounts for over 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions; more than all transportation combined. It’s also responsible for 85% of deforestation and uses up 70% of our planet’s fresh water.

As someone who values all living beings, I wanted my business to reflect my ethical views; both in how I work and the products I offer. That meant choosing cruelty-free materials, supporting sustainable vendors, and reducing waste wherever possible. It also meant rethinking what a photo experience could look like in a more compassionate world.

Cruelty-Free and Sustainable Products Matter

Photography might not be the first industry that comes to mind when you think of animal cruelty or environmental harm, but behind the scenes, it’s full of hidden issues. It’s not always obvious what goes into photographic products. Besides gelatin (which is the big one in standard photographic papers and emulsions), other animal by-products can often be present in prints and other materials:

• Leather – often used for photo album covers, folio boxes, or specialty bindings.

• Glue/adhesives – many traditional adhesives are animal-based (from collagen or casein). Some modern ones are synthetic, but not all.

• Paper sizing – some fine art papers historically used gelatin or casein (milk protein) as a sizing agent to coat and strengthen paper fibers. Many high-end “archival” art papers have switched to synthetic or plant-based sizing, but it varies.

• Inks/dyes – certain pigments and inks may use animal-derived binders or carriers, though this is becoming less common today.

• Waxes – beeswax is sometimes used in coatings, finishes, or bookbinding processes.

Most professional photographers use professional photo labs that offer Kodak and/or Fuji papers, both of which contain gelatin. These mainstream photo labs don’t advertise these details, so it usually takes some digging to confirm whether a product is fully animal-free. I spent months researching and asking questions or labs and manufacturers, so that I could feel confident in the products I was offering. I work exclusively with labs that use FSC® certified wood and paper, water-based non-toxic inks, and cruelty-free printing materials and methods. From wall art to prints, every product I offer is chosen with care, for both quality and conscience.

Creating beautiful dog portraits doesn’t have to come at the planet’s expense. Here are just a few ways I make sure your artwork is both meaningful and mindful:

• Eco-conscious printing labs using solar energy, recycled materials, and sustainable packaging.
• Vegan and non-toxic materials in all products—including adhesives, inks, and fine art papers.
• Paperless contracts and digital materials to reduce waste.
• A home studio setup (no commute = fewer emissions!).
• High-quality, plant-based treats for the pups, made with simple ingredients like natural peanut butter or pumpkin.
• Support for local rescues and shelters, through donations, sessions, and event participation.
