Behind the Free Session: What You Should Know About Photography Promos
If you’ve spent any time on social media, you’ve probably seen the ads:
“Wanted: dogs for a special photo series. Apply Now!”
“Free session and print – enter to win!”
“Win a complimentary photo session and print credit”
They seem to be everywhere in the photography world these days. Sometimes they’re framed as giveaways, sometimes as model calls for a photo series or portfolio-building session. If you’ve ever wondered, “What’s the catch?” you’re not alone.

What’s the catch?
I’ve run many types of promotions over the years; some as giveaways, others as part of special projects, and if there is one thing I’ve always made a priority, it’s transparency. I want you to know exactly what’s being offered, what’s included, and what to expect after the session.
Unfortunately, not every photographer takes that approach. Some promotions are designed to get you in the door with the promise of a “free” session, only to be followed by high-pressure sales tactics or surprise pricing that wasn’t disclosed upfront. That’s not the experience I want to create. I believe you deserve to make informed decisions without feeling misled or cornered. My goal is to offer a meaningful experience and beautiful images…not a bait-and-switch.
This post is here to pull back the curtain a bit and talk openly about what these promos are, how they work, what you should know, and how I approach them at Green Paws Photography.
What these promotions are really about
The idea behind these offers is simple: we want to introduce new people to our work. Whether it’s building a portfolio, testing out new ideas, or growing our business, free session promos are a way to invite people in that may not have considered a session for their dog or may not have even been aware that such a thing existed.
But let’s be honest, no small business can survive on freebies. The hope is that once you see your images, you’ll fall in love with them and want to purchase something special. That’s not a trick or a con, it’s just the business model. It also gives anyone who’s been on the fence a chance to experience our services risk free.
Unfortunately, some promos are built around pressure tactics. Clients are lured in with the promise of a free session and then hit with unexpected prices or pushy sales. It’s left a lot of people feeling skeptical, and I get it.
Let’s Keep It Real (and Clear)
It’s important to approach promotional offers with a clear understanding of what’s included, and what isn’t. The fine print isn’t sneaky, it’s there to provide more information about terms and conditions without taking up too much real estate on the page. It’s important to read those details, so you don’t make assumptions. A complimentary session with a small print is a wonderful gift, but it doesn’t mean everything is free. Just like a voucher for a free appetizer at a nice restaurant doesn’t include the whole 3-course meal, a free session doesn’t come with all the digital images or finished artwork.
If your promotion includes a product credit, feel free to ask about starting prices ahead of time so you know what to expect. Credits are designed to give you a meaningful discount, not to cover the entire cost. In most cases, you’ll likely want to invest a bit more to bring home the images and products you truly love.
Before entering a giveaway or promo, take a moment to look at the photographer’s work. If the style doesn’t resonate with you, the images probably won’t either. A free session isn’t a good deal if it’s not a creative fit. It only wastes your time and the photographer’s.
How I do things
When I run a promotion, whether it’s a giveaway, a model call, or something else, I’m clear about what’s included from the start. If there’s print credit involved, I’ll tell you exactly what it is and what it can be applied toward.
Before your session, I provide all the details so you know what to expect. I have my products and starting prices right on the website, so there are no surprises. After your session, you’ll have time to view your images in a relaxed virtual ordering appointment. I am not a salesperson, nor to I aspire to be. My hope is that you love what I have to offer and choose to invest. There are no surprises and no pressure. You only purchase what you truly love.
If you don’t buy anything beyond the promo gift print, that’s okay. Of course I hope you will, because I genuinely believe the artwork I create will mean something to you and be worth holding onto. But that choice is entirely yours. You’re not being funneled into a high-pressure sales pitch, and there are no hidden obligations. I want you to invest in images because they speak to you, not because you feel backed into a corner.
Why I care about the experience
At the heart of it, I do this work because I love capturing the story and legacy of every dog. I believe they deserve to be appreciated now and remembered for years to come. My goal is to make the experience enjoyable and personal, whether you’re a repeat client or new to the studio.
